1. The Three Forms of GST: CGST, SGST, and IGST Explained

Because India is a federal constitutional republic, both the Central Government and State Governments share taxing power over domestic commerce. The type of GST applied depends directly on the location of the supplier and place of supply:

Intra-State Transactions (Same State)

When the seller and buyer are registered in the same state (e.g. Maharashtra to Maharashtra), the tax is divided equally into two parts:

Total 18% GST = 9% CGST (Central) + 9% SGST (State)

Inter-State Transactions (Different States)

When goods or services move across state borders (e.g. Karnataka to Tamil Nadu), Integrated GST (IGST) is levied in full by the Center and apportioned between jurisdictions:

Total 18% GST = 18% IGST (Single Tax Line)
